Lung volume segmentation in mice

In order to evaluate the effect of lung diseases on lung volume, we used the X-CUBE with its respiratory gating capabilities. It has been shown previously that lung volume is an excellent marker for lung diseases like fibrosis and emphysema.

Prospective respiratory gating was performed using a high resolution protocol on the X-CUBE. The end-enhalation and end-exhalation phases of the respiratory cycle were acquired separately. Then, the air in the lungs was segmented using Horos software, to obtain the lung volume of both phases.The lung volume at the end of the exhalation amounts to 0.311 ml, while at the end of the inhalation, the lung volume amounts to 0.3624 ml, resulting in a difference of 15% between both phases.
